Shelburne Vineyard wines take two gold medals at Big E
The Eastern States Competition, known as the Big E, hosted 260 wines from over 50 wineries throughout New England. Shelburne Vineyard took two of the seven gold medals awarded. The first was for its Marquette, a full-bodied red wine crafted from the Vineyard’s first harvest of the new cold-hardy red Marquette grapes. The second was for its organically grown Nocturne dessert wine, a late-harvest delicacy produced from grapes allowed to over ripen to concentrate the flavor and sugars. In addition to the two gold medals, the local vineyard also took four bronze medals at this event, which honored its Cayuga White, Cote de Champlain, Lakeview White, and Whimsey Meadow Rosé wines.

Shelburne Vineyards received a second recent set of honors this summer when the Vineyard’s Marquette was awarded the Gold Medal, and its Whimsey Meadow Rose and NuMondo red took home bronze. These medals were awarded in a newly created competition dedicated to judging wines from the newly developed cold-hardy grape varieties that have become the mainstay of Vermont’s emerging wine industry. This 2009 International Cold Climate Wine Competition was held on Aug. 25 at the University of Minnesota’s Conference Center in Saint Paul, Minn. As with most wine competitions, awards were based on blind tastings by expert judges including prominent wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers, and wine educators. The inaugural year’s competition included 315 cold climate wines from commercial wineries in 16 states.

Shelburne Vineyard, located at 6308 Shelburne Road in Shelburne, is open to the public year-round and welcomes visitors from 11-5 daily for Tasting and Tours.
