Story:

The vineyards of Quinta do Mondego flourish in an idyllic setting on the banks of the river that names the estate – Mondego. This results in elegant and traditional wines that embrace the terroir of the Dao DOC. Dao is one of Portugal’s most prominent wine regions and is located in the northern part of the country and it’s characterized by the crystalline granite that the river has carved its path through for many millennia.

Tasting:

This Portuguese blend of indigenous grapes Encruzado and Gouveio has a clean nose of citrus, honey on toast, lilies and a crisp mineral streak. Bright in the mouth with flavors of honey dipped lemon slices and apricot pit. The wine is medium-bodied with balanced acidity and a long mineral finish. It’s very compatible with seafood, but we like it with a lemony risotto with summer vegetables – the lemon notes in the wine mimic the dish and fall in beautiful harmony on the palate. Try our Sunshine Risotto recipe.

More:

The Encruzado grape is arguably Portugal’s finest white variety, although far from its most famous. It contributes to this wine’s flavors of stone fruit and lemon as well as the beautiful texture. The Gouveio grape, gives the lively freshness. Both grapes perform very well in the Dao with it’s high elevation and granitic soils. Fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks. 5% of the blend is fermented and aged in 500L barrels and bottling is done after 6 months in the tank with lees stirring.
