Cantine Valpane Rosa Ruske 2015

Cantine Valpane Rosa Ruske 2015 | Bottle Price: $15.99 | Case Price: $172.68

This month’s club we go from what is probably the most well-known grape in Piedmont (nebbiolo) and we veer into a complete unknown (ruchè). Ruchè wines are characterized by their lightness in color and complex aromas, not unlike nebbiolo. The similarities continue with Ruchè having fine but forceful tannins and good acidity to stimulate the palate. The Rosa Ruske is 100% ruchè and is fermented and aged in cement tank.

This wine packs an awful lot of complexity into a wine so inexpensive. Aromatics of blueberry tea, cherry blossom, pomegranate, freesia, orange peel, dry earth, and pink peppercorn. It’s light, but not lacking in flavor or structure. Notes of cherry-berry fruit are matched with earthy notes like wet leaves and a touch of mint. We’ve paired this up with tangy Vinegar Marinated Chicken Thighs with Brown Butter Baby Turnips. This wine is great with a chill on it.

Valpane has a rich history. The stately villa in Monferrato, sits in a perfect amphitheater that has been planted with vines since at least the 1700s. In the early 1900’s Pietro Giuseppe Arditi took his eldest daughter Lydia into the vineyards with him. She quickly became fascinated by his craft and eventually took over the estate. Today Lydia’s nephew, named Pietro for his grandfather, is at the helm. He take’s pride in his vineyards and the great history of Valpane, but never takes credit for his wonderful wines. He says, “I’m just careful not to ruin what the land gives us!”
