Piedmont is best known for its powerhouse red wines (Barolo and Barbaresco) but it also produces the high-acid, mineral-driven Cortese grape from Gavi, located in the southeastern portion of Piedmont near Ligura. Cortese is known for its bracingly high acidity and its ability to retain freshness, even when grown in hot climates. Because of it’s close proximity to Liguria, Gavi shares similar winemaking and gastronomic styles – think seafood pulled straight from the ocean and refreshingly light, bright wines.
This 100% Cortese is immediately appealing on the nose with notes of flint, smoked almond, and lemon peel. Bone-dry on the palate with notes of green fruit and a long lemony finish. It’s very crisp with a stony minerality running throughout the wine. This refreshing white just begs to be paired with seafood. We have an amazing assortment of tinned fish in the market including some octopus. Our Octopus Salad makes an easy, impressive and refreshingly delicious meal. Wonderful as a main course or as part of an antipasto offering with some cured meats, cheeses, and bread. Perfect for a picnic or dinner al fresco.
Franco Serra is produced by the Sperone family. Brother and sister Andrea and Francesca are the 4th generation to run the estate. Situated in Piedmont in the small town of Mombaruzzo just outside Monferrato, they farm the land using sustainable farming practices – they maintain biodiversity, limit any chemical contaminations of the soil and improve and maintain the organic matter content of the soil. Healthy soil equals healthy grapes.
