Story:

This month we are delving into Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Blanc is a straightforward grape variety. Rarely are the flavors hidden in the background. The vines are rather robust and rigorous and the grapes ripen early, so Sauvignon Blanc grows well in relatively cool climates – its Loire homeland for example – while its naturally high acidity allows it to retain a level of freshness even in warmer areas.

Tasting:

The Gaspard offers up bright aromatics of juicy melon and lemon segments. It’s on the lighter side of medium-bodied and has ripe fruit flavors – melon and citrus with notes of spring nettles and lemon verbena. Sauvignon Blanc is super food-friendly and can pair easily with vegetables, seafood, chicken and more. Try this with a delicately herbal Parsley Vichyssoise. The acidity in the wine cuts through the creamy soup and the parsley provides a nice back drop for the nettle and citrus flavors in the wine.

More:

The grapes for the Gaspard come from 40 year old vines grown from clay and limestone soil on 4 ha in Touraine. They are farmed organically and fermented in steel. Touraine is located at the very heart of the Loire Valley. The climate here falls somewhere between maritime and continental and the summer’s are quite hot. Grapes ripen easily in this climate and must be picked early to retain freshness.
