Monferrato, located in Piedmont’s south-east corner, is a beautiful region that is dotted with castles, it’s rich in history and tradition. Winemaker Alessandra Bodda’s Monferrato Rosso is the type of wine that you would expect to be served from a carafe in a small trattoria tucked away in the hills of Piedmont. It’s a bit rustic but perfectly charming, an all-purpose libation that just wants to be enjoyed with food, family, and friends – it true Italian style.

This blend offers up black cherry and currants on the nose. It’s juicy on the palate with a good dose of structure. Flavors of pomegranate, cherry, and cranberry are complemented by notes of purple flowers and dry earth. It’s incredibly food-friendly. Pizza? Yes. Pasta? Yes. Our favorite pairing is with Wild Mushroom and Tuscan Kale Lasagnette. This wine cuts through the richness of this pasta dish.

The cepage of the Monferrato Rosso changes slightly vintage to vintage. The 2015 is comprised of 56% Barbera (half harvested in Asti, half in Monferrato), 11% Freisa, 11% Croatina, 11% Bonarda. It’s a table wine, made to be consumed early and often. It is raised entirely in stainless steel which lends a very refreshing quality to the wine. Monferrato has a continental climate and well-draining sandy and limestone soils which also help deliver that freshness.
