Dedalus Wine

Domaine de Bacarra Beaujolais-Villages

This wine is not glorified fruit punch. This bottle is not ornately gilded in a flowery explosion. This juice is not forced into bottle before it’s ready just so it can hit the market in time for the holidays. This wine is not Beaujolais Nouveau. It is something altogether different and better than what many think of when they hear Beaujolais. Let me introduce you instead to the Bacarra Beaujolais.

Philippe and Nicole Bonhomme are behind this hillside property that has been in Nicole’s family since the 1600s! The average age of the vines is 35-40 years, though much of this wine comes from the estates oldest vines, which in some cases are more than 80 years old.

Made from the Gamay grape, the wine has an enticing aroma like red plum and red cherry with a whisp of wet earth that blows off rather quickly, leaving the fruit to shine. The palate is silky smooth with well-integrated tannin and acidity, and fresh red fruits dominate the palate. This wine is so drinkable and a perfect pairing for the Thanksgiving table. Gamay loves turkey!

My wife, Markey Read, and I spent 5 days in Fluerie France this October and stayed in a B&B at one of the vineyards there. We enjoyed many great Gamay grape wines (and brought back several bottles!) from that Beaujolais region… so what a treat to see one in the November club! We have not opened it yet but we are really hoping for a nice treat that takes us back to the Fall mornings there as we watched the sun rise over the vast, rolling vineyards that were starting to show their fall colors under the orange rising sun.
