There’s a reason that Grenache is one of the most widely planted grapes in the world. Grenache has great body and vibrant fruitiness and it’s naturally low in tannins, making it a lush and generous wine. From France and Spain to Australia and the US, Grenache is everywhere. It’s often used as a blending grape, helping to make up such wines as Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Australian “GSM” blends. And when done right, it stands just beautifully on it’s own.
This Grenache, from producer Maurice Barnouin, is done right. It’s vinified in 100% stainless steel to focus on the freshness and purity of the fruit. The domaine is located in the Cévennes region, a mountain range above the Mediterranean Sea, between the cities of Avignon and Nimes.
The wine gives an alluring nose of red cherry wrapped in cinnamon and caramel. On the palate there are notes of blackberry, cherry, spice, and mild tannins.
What’s my food pairing suggestion? My husband, craving affordable comfort food to go with this affordable wine, suggested Shepard’s Pie and a perfect match was made.
