This is sort of “step into the light” wine. It has the kind of character, depth, and drinkability – the kind of soul, that makes drinking it one of the sunnier moments in a day. To keep playing the metaphor, it is also a revelatory wine. Our expectations of the wines from this ancient, storied appellation generally include some degree of residual sugar. Not here – this is Chenin Blanc in it’s driest, juiciest, most minerally, and generally enjoyable state.
Vigneau-Chevreau makes this level of quality seem effortless. Their family winemaking tradition dates back to 1875 – they’ve been honing their ability to produce vibrant wines for over 135 years! They farm biodynamically, and with no real manipulation in the winery. Very hands off – just the way I like it.
The nose is very attractive – pear, peach, and cinnamon with a bit of vinyl in the background. The wine is a racy mouthful of minerality, lemon, and pear. It’s on the lighter side of medium bodied and super crisp. Be prepared to reach for a second bottle.
