MAY THIRST–DI GIOVANNA SICILIANI BIANCO 2018
STORY: It’s finally getting warmer outside, and that means it’s time for some refreshing whites. Our first comes from the northern tip of Sicily, where viticulture has thrived for centuries. More specifically, this sprightly yet serious white comes from the Monte Genuardo Nature Reserve. A truly Mediterranean white, both fresh and full-bodied, Siciliani represents an unusual blend of French varieties–Chardonnay & Viognier–and the native Grillo grape. Dominant in Chardonnay, the resulting wine bears considerable acidity and minerality, framed by a tropical-fruited edge owing to the Viognier and Grillo.
TASTING: Sourced from its warm, Mediterranean climate, this wine shows off the less-seen, more tropical side of Chardonnay, with ripe yellow and white fruits driving the tasting experience. It is full-bodied and grippy, yet with ample acidity. This will make it particularly delicious when paired with our recipe for Cauliflower Adobo.
MORE: Coming from several microclimates within the Monte Genuardo Reserve, Di Giovanna’s Siciliani Bianco comes from San Giacamo, Sambuco di Siclia, and Paradiso in Contessa Entellina vineyards, where the dominant soil type is rich in limestone and tuff. Farming is certified organic, and harvest is done manually. The resulting wine is gently pressed before being aged on its lees in steel for six months.
