Eduardo Soler wines are heavily influenced by the Old World. His G.S.M. (Garnacha, Syrah, Monastrell) is picked early, to create an easy drinking red. Slightly reductive on the nose, give this a minute to open up to notes of cherry, plum, fresh rose, and mint. Enjoy with a slight chill and cured meats.
It can be difficult to find great value in Rhône Syrah these days as the region experiences a true renaissance in fine winemaking. Lionel Faury has made old-school St.-Josephs and Côte Rôties for decades, and his entry level Syrah is a stunner. Deep and savory, yet bright and fresh, it’s made to go with BBQ.
Chilean wines are here to stay at Dedalus! While this tinto is fermented in concrete, it is aged in older French barrels, giving way to notes of toasty baking spices, brown sugar, and baked apples. Drink this with a VT burger - bacon, apples, and a chunk of cheddar - and your day will be complete.
Domaine Gramenon’s 100% Syrah bottling is a mix of bright red & juicy black berry fruits & dark, earthy notes of black pepper, sage & woodsmoke. This is the wine you want in your glass when tucking into a hearty roast, whether it’s beef or lamb or pork.
Lionel Faury captures all the richness this Northern Rhone appellation has to offer. This St. Joseph is deep and spicy with healthy tannin, black pepper, and bright fruit. A savory wine that would pair beautifully with herbed lamb or a rustic stew.
After losing her husband, Michèle Aubèry-Laurent was faced with the challenge of managing the vineyard and a winery while raising three children. She boldly rose to the occasion and has catapulted the winery into cult status. Michèle works with her son, Maxime François, to produce fresh & intoxicating expressions of Southern Rhone terroir while incorporating biodynamic practices into their everyday lives.
The Aussies call Syrah “Shiraz” and carbonic maceration “carbo-crush”. This playful language translates directly into this bright and zesty bottle. This “micro-negociant” is run by two American sommeliers trying to bring all Australia has to offer to the US, and we are so thankful they’re doing it - this wine is awesome.
The Sonoma Coast has one of the most ideal climates for growing Syrah in California, and saying Arnot-Roberts does it justice would be a gross understatement. Lush fruits and muddled blackberries stain the palate, accompanied by subtle notes of dried herbs and kalamata olive. Enjoy with Lamb!
This nod to Cote Rotie is mostly Syrah with a hint of Viognier, lending some elegance and lighthearted floral aromatics. This wine is five years old, and only starting to develop subtle hints of maturity, with vibrant notes of blueberry, roasted herbs, and earth. The tannins are silky and well-integrated, with ample acidity and freshness.
Yves Cuilleron is the kind of person you’d swear has more hours in his day than the rest of us, he’s that productive. His wine is a pure reflection of hard work, with it’s refinement & structure. This cuvée is blackberries wrapped up in earth, with leather & tobacco coming into the fold with each sip.
Many would argue that the best earthy, mineral-laden Syrahs sourced from the Rhône’s Côte Rôtie (or “roasted slope”) are among the finest expressions of Syrah on the planet. Clusel Roch’s is magnificent, with notes of kalamata olive, blueberry compôte, and fresh earth. Enjoy with roasted lamb.
Franck Balthazar is a flawless winemaker producing some of the most spectacular Syrah in his appellation. The ‘Chaillot’ is inky purple in color, with notes of tobacco, olive & incense aromas intertwined with bitter cherry flavor & a persistent finish. Pair with herb roasted lamb.
At Domaine Leon Barral, crafting beautiful wine and cultivating a living breathing ecosystem within the vineyard go hand in hand. Didier Barral is one of the most holistic and detail-oriented vignerons out there. His wines are immensely powerful, age-worthy, and complex.
The family domaine of Franck Balthazar dates back to the 1930’s & since he took over in 2002, he’s doubled the size of their vineyard sites while maintaining traditions of excellence using natural winemaking practices. The Cornas sings violet aroma, notes of cherry cola & fresh raspberries.
