Thirst Club Wine

Kellerei Saint Pauls Sudtirol Chardonnay 2021

The wines of Alto Adigo are severely underrated—which is crazy to us given how good the terroir is. The sunlit slopes, the varied soils, the protection of the alps all make for ideal growing conditions. And since 1907, the small coop in the town of San Paolo ( St. Paul) have been covertly making seriously good wines that rep their mountain terroir in a big way.

This Chardonnay bears the stamp of its sun-filled region with pride. Its tropical fruit notes and crisp finish make it super drinkable. It comes from a handful of the tiny vineyards farmed by the co-ops 150 members, which all radiate out from the village center. We love it with fish dishes or cheese and crackers for an aperitif.

Producer: Kellerei St. Pauls

Country: Italy

Region: Alto Adige (Sudtirol)

Variety: Chardonnay

Pear, Apple, Peach, Flint, Straw

If you like this Italian Chardonnay from Alto Adige, you should explore Chardonnay from places like Friuli, which is east of Alto Adige, or even Piedmont, to its west. We’ve also tried German Chardonnay that makes a serious case for itself.

- The 150 farmers of the St. Pauls coop farm about 1 hectare each.
- Most of the growers farm organically by choice.
- The cellar dates back to 1907.
- The steeple on the label of this wine is the cathedral at the heart of the tiny village.
