Rioja Crianza is a youthful, drink-me-now red wine made from Tempranillo and sometimes blended with other local varieties. In the ladder of quality, it’s a step above entry-level Rioja. But that tiny jump makes a world of difference. Peciña is located in the heart of Rioja Alta, and was founded in 1992 by Pedro Peciña Crespa and his three sons. Pedro is old school — even when he builds a new winery, he turns to history. His current racking system (for removing naturally occurring sediment from the wine) is built in the historic method, using precise stacking and gravity to clarify the wine. This Crianza is mostly Tempranillo with a small amount of Garnacha and Graciano. Look for notes of jammy, ripe red fruits, toasted wood, and vanilla.
