Though Chenin gets much of the love and acclaim in Azay-le-Rideau, the reds have never been better. Though we love single-variety wines made from Grolleau and Cabernet Franc in this area, ‘Les Pentes’ from Haut Baigneux is a charming blend of the region’s three most important grapes–Cabernet Franc, Grolleau, and Côt (known elsewhere as Malbec). One gets earthy, floral notes from the Cabernet Franc, acidity and minerality from Grolleau, and silky fruit from the Côt. Also sourced from 25 year-old vines and fermented naturally, it is a characterful red that is perfect for the first suggestions of autumnal weather, and the kind of fare that comes with it.
HOW TO:
Solidly medium-bodied, with substantial but silky tannins, ‘Les Pentes’ is fermented naturally and aged exclusively in steel. Solidly herbaceous, owing to its Cabernet Franc, it is balanced out with light, persistent fruit propping up its backbone. At home with a light chill, this is a wine that you can drink all year long without problem. Pair it up with burgers, roast pork, or Thai food that’s not too spicy.
