Chilean wines are here to stay at Dedalus! While this tinto is fermented in concrete, it is aged in older French barrels, giving way to notes of toasty baking spices, brown sugar, and baked apples. Drink this with a VT burger - bacon, apples, and a chunk of cheddar - and your day will be complete.
Domaine Gramenon’s 100% Syrah bottling is a mix of bright red & juicy black berry fruits & dark, earthy notes of black pepper, sage & woodsmoke. This is the wine you want in your glass when tucking into a hearty roast, whether it’s beef or lamb or pork.
After losing her husband, Michèle Aubèry-Laurent was faced with the challenge of managing the vineyard and a winery while raising three children. She boldly rose to the occasion and has catapulted the winery into cult status. Michèle works with her son, Maxime François, to produce fresh & intoxicating expressions of Southern Rhone terroir while incorporating biodynamic practices into their everyday lives.
You may know Gigondas and Châteauneuf, but keep your eyes peeled for excellent Cairannes like this one if you are a lover of full-bodied, Mediterranean reds. Le Gœuil practices non interventionism and her wines reflect that in their purity and drinkability. Enjoy with grilled meat or lamb.
This nod to Cote Rotie is mostly Syrah with a hint of Viognier, lending some elegance and lighthearted floral aromatics. This wine is five years old, and only starting to develop subtle hints of maturity, with vibrant notes of blueberry, roasted herbs, and earth. The tannins are silky and well-integrated, with ample acidity and freshness.
Faith Armstrong and Roger King, the grower, have a close working partnership. Before these vines were planted, this landscape was home to Suisun creek. Over time, the creek migrated, leaving the fertile soils in which these Syrah vines have now taken root. The old creek bed retains dampness and moisture allowing the vineyard to be dry-farmed, no small feat in this region.
This lovely rendition of Syrah comes from young vine fruit that’s entirely destemmed, wafting from the glass with notes of crushed currants, licorice, plum & dried flowers. It has good depth, fine-grained tannins & is gently chewy on the long, sapid finish. All of the elements in this wine fall together effortlessly.
At Domaine Leon Barral, crafting beautiful wine and cultivating a living breathing ecosystem within the vineyard go hand in hand. Didier Barral is one of the most holistic and detail-oriented vignerons out there. His wines are immensely powerful, age-worthy, and complex.
Yves Cuilleron is the kind of person you’d swear has more hours in his day than the rest of us, he’s that productive. His wine is a pure reflection of hard work, with it’s refinement & structure. This cuvée is blackberries wrapped up in earth, with leather & tobacco coming into the fold with each sip.
Many would argue that the best earthy, mineral-laden Syrahs sourced from the Rhône’s Côte Rôtie (or “roasted slope”) are among the finest expressions of Syrah on the planet. Clusel Roch’s is magnificent, with notes of kalamata olive, blueberry compôte, and fresh earth. Enjoy with roasted lamb.
Franck Balthazar is a flawless winemaker producing some of the most spectacular Syrah in his appellation. The ‘Chaillot’ is inky purple in color, with notes of tobacco, olive & incense aromas intertwined with bitter cherry flavor & a persistent finish. Pair with herb roasted lamb.
Laeticia and Rodolph of Fond Cyprès aim to create wines that transmit the signal of their little corner of the Languedoc. This 100% Syrah accomplishes that. It’s vibrant, fresh, and lush, artfully projecting a taste of their landscape with every sip: vines sandwiched between olive groves, herb gardens, and an expansive forest of pine and cypress trees.
The family domaine of Franck Balthazar dates back to the 1930’s & since he took over in 2002, he’s doubled the size of their vineyard sites while maintaining traditions of excellence using natural winemaking practices. The Cornas sings violet aroma, notes of cherry cola & fresh raspberries.
