Colombera & Garella Bramaterra Cascina Cottignano 2019

An amazing vintage, and an all-star winemaking lineup? We’ll take it.

This Bramaterra—a blend of mostly Nebbiolo with some Croatina and Vespolina—comes from Alto Piemonte wunderkind Cristiano Garella and Barolo master Roberto Conterno (best known for Giacomo Conterno and Nervi Conterno in Gattinara.) Both Cristiano and Roberto are passionate advocates for Alto Piemonte, and have played a large role in the region’s recent resurgence.

2019 was an incredible vintage in Bramaterra, and the result is a wine that is delicious right now but has excellent aging potential. It comes from organically farmed vines in the town of Masserano. Fermentation happens in cement and stainless, and elevage in large, old oak barrels for 2 years mellows the blend and adds character and complexity.

This wine is everything we love about Nebbiolo. Alpine strawberry, a hint of violet, a whiff of iron—it easily makes the case for Alto Piemonte terroir. Delicious all around.

Producer: Colombera & Garella

Country: Italy

Region: Piedmont

Variety: Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina

Ripe red fruits, strawberry, iron, violet

If you like this Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte, we think you would also like Pinot Noir, another temperamental cool climate grape. You also might like Xinomavro, a Greek variety that can have rose and violet aromas, similar to Nebbiolo.

- Vespolina is primarily used for blending. It’s the offspring of Nebbiolo and has some of the variety’s spicy characteristics without the intense tannins.
- Generally speaking, Nebbiolo from Bramaterra will be lighter, fresher, and easier drinking than Nebbiolo from Barolo or Barbaresco.
- Cascina Cottignano is where Colombera & Garella got started, and the vines the wine is made from are planted around the farmhouse.

Pair Your Club Wine With...

We think you should pair this Bramaterra with a rich, cozy fall dish like a beef shanks in a red wine sauce. Save your Bramaterra for the table, but pick up a bottle of Chianti or another good Italian red to use in the recipe—and sip on while you cook.
